Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities. In addition to genetic factors, the fetal immune environment during pregnancy has been suggested to contribute to the risk of ASD. The maternal immune activation (MIA) model is an experimental system that exposes pregnant mothers to inflammatory stimuli to investigate the effects of immune factors on fetal brain development.This paper reviews structural and functional abnormalities of inhibitory interneurons, particularly parvalbumin (PV), calbindin (CB), and calretinin (CR)-positive neurons, reported in the MIA model, and discusses their association with ASD-like behaviors and potential therapeutic applications.
